What Is
Prayer?
Reverend Liz
Petipren
“Oh God!” is a common
expression of both fear and surprise. Although this may not seem like a prayer, these two words definitely
qualify. In times of stress we invoke help from a higher source through the power of prayer. Prayer needs no
style or a special order of words to get God’s attention.
I once thought prayers were
special poems repeated in church, recited before meals or at funerals. I now know words of mercy and grace are
used for a multitude of reasons. Prayer is the hotline to God, from our mouths to God’s ear. And if God isn’t
home, there is an entire directory of options from which to choose, starting with angels and saints and working
your way to a host of deceased relatives.
Most people feel that
prayer is most important to use on those occasions when divine intervention is necessary.
There doesn’t have to be a
mystical eloquence or magical words to get God’s attention. All prayers offered in sincerity are equal to the
ears of divine consciousness. In simplest terms, all thought is prayer.
We summon God’s attention
and solicit divine inspiration during moments of personal crisis, a human need as old as history. As many
non-secular surveys reveal, the popularity of prayer as a coping technique to deal with stress has never
wavered. If anything, the interest in prayer has increased over the years, particularly in the field of
alternative medicine, where complimentary modes of healing have brought new light to the ageless wisdom and
power of prayer.
I invite you to join Unity
in the Pines as we celebrate Silent Unity’s World Day of Prayer, on Thursday, September
8th. There will be a special evening service and
meditation hour from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. You may sign up to be part of
the all-day vigil of prayer in the Sanctuary. We are all channels through which Spirit illumines our world.
Please see the enclosed flier for more information.

Raiser to help pay for our future kitchen renovations.
She asks that if you are online to send your
recipes to Cynthia@cynthiamacgregor.com
please put CHURCH RECIPES in the subject line. If you are not online, but you have a typewriter, typing is
easier to read than handwriting. But of course, neatly handwritten recipes are welcome too. If you not
online, you can either mail your recipe to her or give it to her in church on Sundays or drop it in the
basket marked DROP OFF RECIPES on the green table in the church lobby. Please remember to put your name on
the recipes you submit so we may honor them to you in the book.

Guest Presenter Joy Lynn Freeman
Feeling Freer and Younger at Any Age
Joy uses song to help deliver her message of how to feel and be more vital, healthy and alive no matter what your
age. Her 6 keys result in living and working with more creativity and joy. In this unique and engaging interplay of
performance, participation and lecture you will learn how true success is the balance of your inner peace and outer
expression and how to bring that forth to enliven and empower everything you do. She shows audiences how to let go
of self-judgment and let their truth and creative selves out by walking her talk as she speaks. Joy has gone from a
woman who couldn’t and wouldn’t sing, or stand before others to speak, to someone who does. Now she will even sing
her own soul revealing songs in front of an audience. Her words and songs deeply inspire the audience to find their
own soul’s expression and to let it out. Through this release of passion, one can regain their health and
vitality.

From
“The Church Bell” in Brooklyn, CT
A father was approached by his small son who told him proudly, “I know what the Bible means!” His father smiled and
replied, “What do you mean, you ‘know’ what the Bible means?” “That’s easy, Daddy…” the young boy replied
excitedly. “It stands for ‘Basic Information Before Leaving Earth’.”
There are only two kinds of people in the world. There are those who wake up in the morning and say “Good morning,
Lord.” And there are those who wake up and say “Good Lord! It’s morning!”
