A Lenten Mental Diet

I recall an interesting conversation I had with a man at another Unity Church in Florida as we stood near the literature racks, discussing Emmet Fox’s “Seven-Day Mental Diet.”  This is the diet for getting rid of negative thoughts rather than pounds. The idea is that for seven days a person does not allow his or her mind to think on the negative side of life, but rather be determined to think on that which is positive, constructive, and good. The result is a complete change for the better in the trend of what we want our lives to be.  

This man said to me, “You know this is a great little pamphlet, but too bad that it can’t be done.”  When I asked him what he meant he said, “No one can control their thinking for one hour even, let alone for seven days, it just can’t be done.” 

Many Truth students say to me: “If only I could control my thinking, how much better my life would be! But I just can’t seem to do it; so many opposing thoughts and feelings come in.”  

I cannot think of anything that is more important as a foundation for living the Truth of Christ than to control one’s thinking. We understand that in Truth one of the aspects of God is divine intelligence and that the demonstration of any good thing necessarily comes through the proper use of our faculties of mind and heart. 

The season of Lent is the best opportune time to fast from negative thinking and feast on positive thoughts, not just for seven days but rather for the whole forty days of Lent.  

This is exactly how Charles Fillmore, co-founder of Unity, views the Lenten season, “Lent is not only a physical discipline to help cleanse the body but also to feast on the things of Spirit.” “When we have truly feasted in this Christ way we have increased our ability to respond to God’s good will for ourselves and all others.” 

This Lenten season, begin to practice positive thinking. Join me on the first day of the Lenten season, Wednesday, March 09, 2011 for a one hour Ash Wednesday Meditation from 6:30 to 7:30 PM. Doing so you will receive a free Lenten booklet covering the 40days of Lent and also a Unity Classic booklet, “The Mental Equivalent” by Emmet Fox, to help aid you in fasting from those old worn out negative thought patterns and begin feasting on true positive thoughts. When you do this for forty days your life will definitely change for the better.

It is my pleasure to serve as President on the Board of Directors.  I feel at home in our little church and have a sense of family here. 

We do have a need to increase revenue and membership.  Any ideas you may regarding these issues, please let your voice be heard.  One option is tithing and another is to increase your weekly love donation.  Also bring a friend to church service and share fellowship; your friend could also bring a friend.  

The church must grow in order to survive and thrive.  

I have begun a community out reach program.  My wife, Christina, and I are distributing RESPOND WITH LOVE BUMPER STICKERS, Unity in the Pines business cards and Unity booklets.  We are currently passing these out on the plaza in downtown Lake Worth every other Friday.  This is creating exposure.

Join in a meditation hour in honor of Ash Wednesday, and the beginning of the Lenten season at Unity in the Pines. You will experience:  

A Metaphysical interpretation of the meaning of Lent, how to keep a true Lent, take part in an Anointing ceremony, facilitated by Rev. Liz Petipren and receive a free Lenten Booklet from Silent Unity. This is a time for sharing in a circle of love and spiritual preparation for the glorious event of Easter Sunday.

Not only do we need your energy to pick up and weed out the gardens but also donations of an assortment of new plants and flowers to help beautify our grounds. Thank you in advance for your help.
