One Day at a Time By
Reverend Liz Petipren
“Give us this day our daily bread.” Normally, we focus on this particular passage
as proof that God will supply our needs. True! But there is another message in this line that is equally important.
Look again at the words, give us this day. Do you see the implications? Jesus did not teach us to pray for
perpetual happiness. He did not say, “Grant us always the good we desire.” Rather, He taught, “Give us this
day.”
What this says to us is that each day we are to turn anew to God, our Source, and
ask that He give us the bread (meaning whatever we require) to meet the challenges of that day-and that day
only.
One day at a time is the key. Pessimism and fear are almost always the result of
being concerned with the future, of worrying about next year’s recession, or a job interview in two weeks, or even
the bills that must be paid tomorrow. Jesus warned against that attitude. “Do not be anxious about your life, what
you shall eat or what you shall drink.” (Matt. 6:25) When we worry or plan furiously for the future, we are
assuming that the persons we become in that future time will still want the same things that we want and hope for
now. This may not be the case. In fact, all our efforts might be in direct opposition to what our future selves
wish to experience.
Look to this day. Let go of tomorrow. You cannot control completely what it will
bring. What you can control are your actions and attitudes. This day, you are setting in motion the causes that
will have their results in what you experience later. If you give your finest efforts to today, you can rest
assured that the results tomorrow will be the best possible.
So let us decide now to start each day in the best way possible. Let us take time
every morning to turn to God and as we go forth into this day, let us devote ourselves completely, living in the
present always giving our best effort to the jobs and challenges at hand. Then, we can be sure that tomorrow will
bring the perfect results needed for that day. “One Day at a Time!”
President Patrick
Callahan
Patrick Callahan is a person you can count on. Pat was raised Roman
Catholic, but during the 1980’s began his Metaphysical studies and became a Buddhist. Both he and Christina
Callahan have been dedicated members of Unity in the Pines after attending the Christmas Eve service in 2008.
Pat has now offered to serve on the Board of Trustees as of this current year of 2011. Patrick feels that,
“Unity in the Pines is my home” and will do everything he can to keep it going as a center of love and
peace.
Vice President
Betti Rogers
Betti has been a member of Unity since 1971. She leads by example, serving for
years on Women of Unity, maintaining the “White Elephant” table and offering refreshments after Sunday service
in Fellowship Hall. Betti is a constant, loving presence at Unity in the Pines. To quote one member who has
known Betti for years, “Betti is truly a loving, peaceful expression of all that God asks us to
be”.
Minister Rev. Liz
Petipren
As the minister of Unity in the Pines, Rev. Liz is automatically on the
Board. She is an ordained Unity Minister and a licensed Unity Teacher since 1996. She has been a member of the
Unity Movement for over thirty years.
Treasurer Louise
Hunsinger
Louise has been a member of Unity since 1979, The Women of Unity
since 1982, the Board of Trustees since 1983 and our Treasurer/Bookkeeper since 1985. Although Louise doesn’t
drive, she has always found a way to get to church. She’s here every Sunday and several times during the
week.
If you haven’t seen Louise on Sunday, it may be because she’s in the office before
the service, sits in the back of the sanctuary, and leaves for the office before the end of the service to take
care of the offerings.
Secretary Kristine
Baker
Kristine joined Unity in the Pines in 2000 and has served as a Board member
for two previous terms. She has been on several committees, served as platform assistant and is currently
editor of the newsletter. Kristine credits “The Four T’s” classes with helping her to better understand the
importance of tithing. She looks forward to helping our church grow, not only by welcoming all who enter our
doors, but by reaching out to the community.
